Everyday we are influenced by so many aspects ; the news, social media, TV ads, radio ads, and people surrounding us. Without us knowing, we are exposed to a lot of negativity, which tends to affect us on a deeper level and may not lead us to live our best life.
We tend to pick up on other’s opinions and beliefs, however negative it might be, and consider it as true, while we may initially be neutral as human beings.
What we have to understand is that we, as human beings, are affected by everything surrounding us, whether it is our environment, our colleagues, our family, the lifestyle we chose to have, the energy emanating from others, other people’s opinions and emotions.
Studies have shown that our genes and certain areas of our brain are hugely affected by all of these aspects. Now how do you choose to be affected ? How do you take over the control of your life while all of these can have an impact on your genes and brain ?
Take ownership ! The only way to take ownership is to make conscious choices. Choices about what or who you want to be, and allowing what should influence you or not.
We live in an era where negativity has literally become the new normal, all day everyday. People are afraid, they complain, they feel helpless. Yet they may not be aware that these states are potentially detrimental to them.
According to scientific studies, the more we allow negative words and concepts into our thoughts, the more we are increasing the activity in our brain’s fear center, causing stress-producing hormones to flood our system. These hormones and neurotransmitters interrupt the logic and reasoning processes in the brain and inhibit normal functionality.
And you might as well be aware that the more our stress level rises, the more our immunity is reduced, and stress can actually be the catalyst of so many dysfunctions.
On the other hand, positivity can hugely impact your life in a number of ways. Dr. Andrew Newberg, a neuroscientist at Thomas Jefferson University, and Mark Robert Waldman, a communications expert, state that a single word has the power to influence the expression of genes that regulate physical and emotional stress.
“By holding a positive and optimistic [word] in your mind, you stimulate frontal lobe activity. This area includes specific language centers that connect directly to the motor cortex responsible for moving you into action. And as our research has shown, the longer you concentrate on positive words, the more you begin to affect other areas of the brain.”
For example, positive words, such as “peace” and “love,” can alter the expression of your genes, strengthen areas in our frontal lobes and promote the brain’s cognitive functioning. They propel the motivational centers of the brain into action, and build resiliency, according to the authors of the book “Words can change your brain”.
Over time, the more we are exposed to positive thoughts, functions in the parietal lobe start to change. As a consequence, this also leads to changed perception of our world and those around us. Essentially, holding a positive view of ourselves helps train our brain to see the good in situations and in others.
Evidently, adding more positivity in our lives and starving the toxicity in our thoughts, words and environment can definitely cause a tremendous shift in our lives. The world would surely be a better place if this information was mainstream for decades.
Today’s science exposes the fact that our words become our thoughts , our thought patterns directly shape our very own perception of the world.
